3rd March 2008 - Spring Update.
Spring keeps threatening to arrive, but is then almost literally blown away by the icy winds. We've delayed the planting of the early potatoes to see if the weather settles. The soil is warm enough but any threat of sleet and snow makes it too much of a risk. The fields still have lots of colourful produce despite the season. The Purple Sprouting Broccoli is a favourite to us at Paradise Farm, and is up there with Asparagus as the best of British seasonal produce. The fields are busy with tractors at this time of year, preparing for the arrival of the first transplants. First to arrive are cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce, beetroot and cabbage. These will be planted into beds and then covered in fleece. The fleece is great stuff, it not only keeps the plants and soil warm advancing growth, but also keeps the rabbits, hares and pigeons off the delicate new plants.
