Welcome to Paradise Farm Organics - Supporting conservation & local wildlife
Paradise farm has been managed on an environmental basis since 1997.
Certified 'Organic' by the Soil Association in 2001 the restrictions
on pesticide use and other sustainable farming methods have allowed
nature a chance to thrive.
The farm boundary is set by the River Derwent. There are also woodlands
and riverside pastures at Paradise Farm. All the cropped fields have
large grass margins which are left to encourage wildlife, and the hedges
are managed sensitively with the same aim in mind. These are just a
few features that encourage the wildlife to flourish at the farm.
Some of our favourite residents are a pair of barn owls, pair of little
owls, as well as deer and badgers. These are found alongside a wide
variety of bird, butterfly and wild plant species.
Most frequently seen are rabbits and hares who live in abundance around
the farm. This can be quite problematic for organic vegetable growers
as farms turn into one giant buffet for them. Most farmers consider
these creatures to be vermin and will shoot them when they eat too much
of the produce. We think they are too cute for that, so instead we put
up a fence to keep them out.
